FOREST HILLS NORTHERN 10 - BELDING 0
HUSKIES REACH A TEAM GOAL; BEAT BELDING FOR 10th WIN
The Huskies returned home Monday night following an exciting game vs. Forest Hills Eastern last Friday. The Huskies would also come into the game after a long weekend as several of the girls attended the schools prom Saturday night. The Huskies would have to put all that behind them and focus in as they welcomed Belding to Husky Stadium.
Belding would enter the game with a 2 and 7 record in the conference while the Huskies sit on top of the conference at 9 and 0. There would be no let down or upset tonight as the Huskies would roll to the 10-0 mercy win over the Redskins.
The Huskies, averaging a goal every 4 minutes for the game would surge forward by scoring their first 4 goals in the game’s opening 7 minutes of play. The Huskies would get on the board first as Senior Andrea Byl finished off a great cross from Junior Sophie Rammal. Junior Maria Rich, Sophomore Sam Schab and Senior Joanna Chen each would get the Huskies on the scoreboard with a goal in the opening 7 minutes. “We stressed in the team room to keep playing our game and to not just force things” Head Coach Jamie Bogart would continue “We moved the ball pretty well tonight using everyone. For that I was happy”. For Joanna Chen and Sam Schab this would be their first goals of the season, while Byl and Rich each added their 4th and 10th respectively.
The Huskies would go through a little bit of a dry spell, but continued to control the game pretty well. “I don’t remember a lot of throw ins and this is a sign of keeping the ball moving and in play. We just couldn’t figure out the final 3rd there for awhile”
The Huskies would get two more goals before the game was 20minutes old as Senior Madeline Rammal and Freshman Lindsay Rich would each notch a goal. Rammal’s goal (Which was assisted by Lindsay Rich) was well struck from about 20 yards out and found the open part of the net. Rich’s goal was the product of a well placed shot which followed a great move on a Belding defender. Sophomore Carly Belsito would get the assist on the Rich goal.
The Huskies would go through another dry spell, but still continued to move the ball around pretty well. The dry spell was broke as Maria Rich would add her second goal of the game and her 11th goal of the season. The goal was set up by the strong midfield play of Lindsay Rich and Madeline Rammal. Rammal would be credited for the assist. Following the Rich goal, the Huskies would go back to the foot of a Rich. This time it was Lindsay Rich who would connect for her second goal of the day. Rich, would once again beat a defender and hit a shot that resembled the shot on her first goal. “It was kind of a déjà vu moment. Both of Lindsay’s goals were exactly the same” Bogart said of the freshman’s goal which mimicked her first.
The Rich goal would mark the 8th for the Huskies giving them enough goals for the half-time mercy. The Huskies however would add two more goals to give them their final count.
The 9th goal would be a key goal for the Huskies and reaching one of their team goals. “For the past couple of seasons (Last 3 for sure) one of the team goals has been to have everyone on the team to score at least one goal for the season” Bogart said. Coming into the game, the Huskies were looking at 3 players who needed to get into the stat book with a goal. It would have been two however Freshman Andrea Zandee was recently called up to Varsity to help fill the void for the injured Jace Mitcham. Zandee would get her goal. The Huskies opening up the field played the ball back to Sophomore Olivia Griffith (who was the Huskies Keeper at the time) and cleared a nice high ball to the right hand side of the field. The ball would be collected by Zandee at Midfield and went in towards goal. Zandee had several passing options as the movement off the ball was the key. Zandee didn’t get pressure until the top of the 18 when she would make one move, beat the defender and play a low shot near post around the Belding keeper. “Andrea’s goal along with Joanna and Sam’s early on helped us to reach one of our team goals. The new “Fun” goal is can we get everyone on the team an assist? We have four players left who need an assist” Bogart said of his team. The Huskies will now shoot for this target.
Sophomore Carly Belsito would conclude the Husky goal parade with her 5th of the season. Belsito worked a nice combination play with Freshman Alex Fraser, than beat two defenders and hit a well placed ball back post for the Huskies 10th goal of the half/game.
With the win, the Huskies move to a 10-3-1 overall record and a 10 and 0 conference mark. The Huskies go on the road Wednesday night to take on Cedar Springs. This will be the second meeting between the two schools this season with Huskies winning a well contested 2-1 game. Game time is set for 7:00pm with the JV contest starting at 5:30pm. The JV game should also be a good one as the Huskies earned the 1-0 victory during the first meeting.
The Huskies will return home next week Tuesday vs. Coopersville. This game is important as it will be the Huskies senior night.
