FOREST HILLS NORTHERN 7 - COMSTOCK PARK 0
UNDERCLASSMAN LEAD HUSKIES TO FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
Lead by Freshman Robyn Wujkowski’s hat trick, the Huskies moved on to Spring Break with a 7 – 0 win over visiting Comstock Park. Playing without a few key players, the Huskies rallied behind the strong performance of their underclassman. “Our Freshman and Sophomores played very well” Coach Jamie Bogart explained “They were our pulse tonight, they led us”.
The scoring started, as Sophomore Teigan Mitcham collected a punt from Freshman Ally Kiekover at midfield. Teigan made two moves and took the ball in towards goal where she placed a shot back post. The goal came in the 7th minute. “It was a GREAT way to start the scoring for the season” Bogart stated. “Ally picked up the loose ball and had a very good punt to mid field, where Teigan took over from there”. Ally Kiekover, a freshman goalkeeper earned the start and along with Danielle Harrison picked up the shutout in the absence of regular starter, Kristiana Griffith. “You get a good feeling when your goalkeeper gets the first assist of the season”.
A few moments later, Sophomore Carly Belsito came off the bench and made an instant impact. In the 9th minute of the game, Carly was able to connect on a cross from Junior Sophie Rammal and placed the ball in the back of the net. That is when the scoring really started. Freshman Robyn Wujkowski scored the first goal of her three goals about 11 minutes into the game. Robyn collected a pass from Belsito and raced down the sideline, beating a defender and angled her run towards the goal where she placed a beautiful shot back post.
In the 16th Minute, Robyn Wujkowski put her second goal in of the game by finishing a nice “follow up” goal. Sophie Rammal, took a pass, made a couple of moves and from just outside the corner of the 18 placed a rocket off the far post. Robyn was there to finish the goal off. Bogart explained, “We always talk about being pro-active, and being in the right place and the right time. Robyn listened.”
The returning OK Blue MOP from a year ago, Junior Maria Rich got her scoring touch back as she took a pass from Freshman Alex Fraser. Maria made one move at the top of the box and hammered home a shot from about 15 yards out. Wujkowski would conclude the scoring in the first half, by taking a backdoor pass from Maria Rich and hitting home a low driven ball, beating the Comstock Park Keeper near post.
The final goal of the game came in about the 17th minute of the second half, as Freshman Lindsay Rich played a nice floating ball into the box where, Junior defender Becca Quinn ran under and headed the ball back post. “Lindsay, is a player who is making great strides on the field, and this was a great game for her to start her high school carrier with” Bogart continued “Lindsay played a great ball into the box, and Becca was all alone and took care of the rest”.
Ally Kiekover and Danielle Harrison both shared the goalkeeper duties each helping in recording the shutout.
The Huskies weren’t flashy tonight, they weren’t smooth, but they did what they need to do to get the win. “What we will take from this game, is that we got a lot of young players significant playing time, and we were able to really put our set plays on display”.
The Huskies head into Spring Break with a 1 and 0 record and are tied for first in the conference. The Huskies will return from break where they will play 8 games in 12 days. “We have the meat of our schedule coming up right after break, so we need to use this time off to heel our wounds and get re-focused for what will be a rough stretch” Bogart stated. How rough will this stretch be? The Huskies will play 6 of the 8 games on the road, with games that feature a trip to Petoskey, as well as a game vs. the 5 time defending D3 state champions in the Calvin Christian invite. The Huskies also face defending OK Blue Champ at home on April 19th.
