HUSKIES ROLL TO UNDEFEATED CONFERENCE RECORD; HONOR GR CENTRAL COACH AFTER GAME
With the outside temperature reaching the low 90’s the Huskies headed to Highland Park to finish out the regular season on the road against Grand Rapids Central. The Huskies, coming into the game with a 13 and 0 record and already crowned champions in the conference, presented themselves with a chance to become the undefeated conference champions.
Battling the heat and a field that was un-mowed and bumpy, the Huskies struggled to get on the board early as it would take close to 9 minutes before Sophomore Teigan Mitcham would take a nice centering ball from Freshman Robyn Wujkowski and place it in the back of the net. “Teigan came back from injury today and took full advantage of the opportunity to play again” Coach Bogart stated of the sophomore striker.
The Huskies would get on the board again just 3 minutes later as Freshman Alex Fraser would hammer home a shot for her 5th goal of the year. Fraser’s goal was assisted by Junior Sophie Rammal. Rammal would set up for a corner kick just a minute and a half later and played a beautiful ball into the box and back post to a wide open Teigan Mitcham. Mitcham would head home her second goal of the game and the Huskies would go up 3-0.
Mitcham would put her third goal of the game in about 4 minutes later as Sophomore Carly Belsito found Mitcham making a back door run. Mitcham would collect the pass from Belsito and placed it back post for the 4-0 Husky lead. The Huskies would get on the board one more time in the first half as Belsito would once again take part in a goal. This time, Belsito found an open Lindsay Rich at the top of the box and the Freshman midfielder placed a firm rolling ball into the lower left corner of the goal. The goal would make the count 5-0 Huskies. That is where the score would stay for half-time.
The second half would only last 7 minutes as the Huskies would come out with strong possession and put 3 goals in to end the game with the 8-0 mercy.
The Huskies 6th goal would come from a pair of Seniors. Madeline Rammal and Andrea Byl connected with a nice combination play at the top of the box. Byl collected the ball from Rammal and placed the ball into the side netting for her 6th goal of the season. Rammal would be rewarded for her efforts as she was able to hit home her 5th goal of the season. Sophomore Danielle Harrison would find the wide open Rammal with a nice square pass and Rammal would do the rest.
The Huskies would end the scoring and the game in the 7th minute of the 2nd half as Freshman Lindsay Rich was able to find Junior Kristiana Griffith setting up with her back to the goal at about the PK spot. Griffith would control the pass from Rich, turn the Central defender and play a ball back post and into the side netting.
Griffith would also earn her 8th shutout on the season as the regular goalkeeper. Sophomore Kat Krukowski also earned a shutout as she replaced Griffith about 15 minutes into the first half.
After the game and the final handshakes between the teams, the Huskies honored long time GR Central coach, Bill Osborne with some gifts of appreciation for his work at GR Central.
Tonight’s game represented the last time GR Central would ever play a regular season soccer game. Starting this fall, GR Central will no longer have sports. “Oz has been the coach at the city school for the past 21 years and has done an outstanding job. It is fitting for us to honor him and his last team” Coach Bogart would continue “I have gotten to know Oz over the past several years as a coach. He has a tough job year in and year out, but he does it with the utmost respect, and does it with a passion and dedication that can not be matched by myself or anyone else who coaches in the area.”
Osborne will say goodbye to his GR Central Rams following the season, but will take his place and continue to do the work he loves with a passion at Grand Rapids Union. Osborne will take over this fall with the boy’s team. “I will miss coaching against him, Oz is a tremendous coach and has done a wonderful job at Central. But even with all that, it doesn’t touch how great of a guy he is” Bogart would say of his colleague. Junior Goalkeeper Kristiana Griffith was overheard to say “He is such a nice guy” speaking of Oz.
With a few words of appreciation, the Huskies presented coach Oz with a card signed by each of the Husky players, as well as a gift card and a team shirt. FHN would like to wish Oz and his team good luck in the upcoming MHSAA District tournament.
The Huskies will take part as the host site for the district tournament. The Huskies will open the tournament with Grand Rapids Union at 3:30pm on Tuesday, June 1st.
