FOREST HILLS NORTHERN 8 - BELDING 0
SOPHOMORES 5, FRESHMAN 3 AS YOUTHFUL HUSKIES SHOOT PAST BELDING
For the first seventeen minutes of the soccer contest between the Belding Redskins and the Forest Hills Northern Huskies, looked more like a shooting gallery than a soccer game. FHN took early control of the game and compiled an overwhelming 13 shots on goal in the first ten minutes played. “On every shot we took, we hit the same two feet of the twenty-four foot goal….that happened to be the two feet where the Belding Keeper stood” Head Coach Jamie Bogart stated. “We just didn’t look to see where the keeper was”
The shots continued to mount for the next seven minutes, so did the frustration. That frustration was quickly erased as junior striker Maria Rich, with her back to the goal, found a charging Alex Fraser. The freshman took the drop ball from Rich and drilled the ball off the cross bar and into the goal. That goal would mark Fraser’s second goal of the year.
A few moments later, Sophomore Sam Schab played a well placed ball across the box, where freshman Robyn Wujkowski would once again find the back of the net. “Robyn has learned to not let up while racing through the box. She once again beat the keeper to the ball and the end result, was a goal” Bogart said of Wujkowski’s efforts.
The Huskies would get two more first half goals. Both goals were by sophomore striker Teigan Mitcham. Teigan’s first goal was a left footed shot that snuck right under the cross bar from about 14 yards out. Senior Hanna Schlesinger earned the assist with a brilliant through ball, which split two Belding defenders found Mitcham’s foot. Freshman Robyn Wujkowski would break down the Belding defense a few moments later and found Mitcham on a centering ball. Mitcham found the back of the net for her second goal of the night and the Huskies fourth.
The score would remain 4-0 at half-time despite several scoring chances by the Huskies.
Junior Danielle Harrison earned her first goal of the season by being in the right place at the right time. About three minutes into the second half, Junior Sophie Rammal placed a beautiful corner kick into the box. Several Huskies had a crack at the goal, however Belding’s defense (10 strong in the box) would deflect every Husky attempt. It was until a shot by Alex Fraser, that deflected towards the Belding keeper, who quickly got a leg to the ball, however her clear found the right foot of Harrison who slammed home the shot from the top of the 18. “Being in the right spot at the right time, is the product of being smart and reading the play and understanding what may happen next, Danielle just moved and put herself in a scoring position and the timing was perfect” Bogart started of Harrisons timing on the play.
The Huskies would add three more goals to close out the game. Freshman Alex Fraser got her second goal of the game. Fraser found the back of the net after receiving a great pass from Junior Midfielder Brenna Sellman. Sophomore Carly Belsito would strike gold two times in the next 5 minutes.
Senior Hanna Schlesinger played a nice through ball to the PK spot where, Carly ran onto the ball and placed it just to the right of Belding keeper. A few moments later, Carly ended the game with just over 20 minutes to play (Due to MHSAA mercy rule). Robyn Wujkowski would once again beat the Belding defense and played a ball through the air from the goal line, to where Belsito struck the ball out of the air and into the back of the net. “It was a beautiful goal all around. From the time, Robyn played the ball, it never hit the ground until after it hit the back of the net. It was a very solid full volley, a great way to end a game”.
With the 8-0 win, Northern pushes their record to 3-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference. The Huskies take to the field again tomorrow morning in the Calvin Christian quad. Northern will get their crack at 5 times defending state champion at 10:00am as the Huskies will take on Unity Christian. They will than take on ether Grand Rapids Christian or Calvin Christian in the 12:00 noon game.
